E-bikes

Case reference FOI2026/02031

Received 30 September 2026

Published 28 October 2026

Request

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, please provide the following recorded information: 1. The number of electric bikes (e-bikes) seized by your force in each month from 1 January 2024 to 30 September 2026. 2. The number of electric scooters (e-scooters) seized by your force in each month over the same period. Definitions By "e-bike", I mean any electric bicycle seized because it did not meet the legal requirements for an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC). This includes bikes fitted with conversion kits or otherwise modified. By "seized", I mean any seizure under any power, for example Section 165A of the Road Traffic Act 1988 or Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002.

Response

Since its inception in July 2023 the Cycle Team have seized 929
bikes/scooters/unicycles/skateboards that were being ridden illegally on the road. We do not
break down between e-bike/scooter/skateboard etc. The vast majority are e-bikes followed
by scooters with only a few skateboards.
Most of these were destroyed (we don’t have exact numbers but very few are returned.)
To locate the information requested would require reading each individual MO per crime
and this would result in a Section 12 Refusal Notice
